SIA App Challenge 2016

Sept 27, 2019

1st - 8th October 2016

We are well and truly into the hackathon season again and one of the major events on the horizon is the Singapore Airlines, SIA App Challenge. Following on from the huge success of this event last year, SITA are delighted to be partnering with Singapore Airlines again this year to offer access for developers to its range of APIs via the SITA API platform, the API hub for the Air Transport Industry.

Business challenges for the App Challenge will be unveiled during the kick-off session on 1 Oct 2016 at the SIA Sports Club with the event finale taking place on 8 Oct.

The SITA APIs available are part of the SITA Day of Travel Service (DOTS) suite of APIs along with the SITA BagJourney API that gets the real-time status of a bag or list of bag tags for a particular flight.

In addition to providing access to a wide range of airport and flight data for the event, including gate status, baggage, weather, flight tracking, and mobile boarding passes, the SITA Beacon API and Common Use Beacon Registry will also be at the disposal of developers to enable them to develop apps to provide personalized, location-targeted content to passengers.

A simulated airport zone with be set up using bluetooth beacons within the hackathon venue. Apps using the Beacon API will be able to retrieve lists of beacons deployed at this pseudo airport and to get details of individual beacons which can be used to determine passenger location within the zone and therefore provide contextualized content or trigger a notification to assist the passenger, such as baggage claim belt number or check-in information.

SITA representatives from our local Singapore office and from SITA Lab will be in attendance at the event to support developers.
