SITA Beacon Registry and API will help inspire developer innovation at Hackathon@HOLM

Mar 02, 2016

The forthcoming Hackathon@HOLM event on March 4th will no doubt provide an exciting opportunity to challenge techies to create innovative apps that will improve the convenience for travelers as they journey through Frankfurt Airport to and from flights, and while doing so, avail of the many retail and recreational facilities and services that the airport has to offer.

Giving passengers with mobile devices the right information at the right time will be key for developers as they compete to create the best possible experience for travelers. Using beacon technology, an airport app can detect proximity values from beacons installed throughout the terminal to discover its location and then unlock relevant, location contextual information on the traveler’s Smartphone or tablet, for example, time to gate, nearest dining areas or special offers in a nearby retail store.

Fraport has installed its own beacon infrastructure for this Hackathon@HOLM event which is registered in the SITA Common-use Beacon Registry, a repository which allows beacon owners (airlines, airports or 3rd parties) to manage their beacon infrastructure and track where beacons are placed in an airport. The SITA Beacon API can be easily integrated into a developer’s app to unlock this beacon data.
