BagJourney – tracking a bag like a parcel

10 March 2015

Nick Gates, SITA Portfolio Director, Baggage, has been speaking at the Passenger Terminal Expo in Paris today about SITA’s baggage tracking offering, BagJourney, which enables bags to be tracked in a similar way to parcels. BagJourney processes 2.5 billion data messages for the global airline and airport community via the SITA BagMessage system, applying business intelligence rules to the information to make it relevant and accessible for all types of baggage handling queries.

According to Nick, “SITA's BagJourney follows the bag from check-in to final delivery, through multiple airports and multiple airlines. We at SITA have now made it possible to track airline baggage just like a parcel. We are delivering this service to our community via an application programming interface (API) to allow airlines and airports to integrate it into to their existing systems quickly and easily, including services such as mobile updates which they might offer to passengers.”

Ben Kepes highlights the impact of building innovative applications with built-in baggage location data in his recent article in Forbes. Ben also comments that this is as much a story about an interesting solution that makes travelers’ lives easier, as it is a story about how to build a vibrant third party ecosystem around your core data.
