Introduction

Apple’s Passbook, which is available on iPhone and iPod touch devices with iOS 6 and later versions, allows users to store and access all their boarding passes and much more. Passbook boarding passes can be distributed via email, the web, or directly to an app. A link to the pass may be included in emails or the mobile web page which enables iOS 6 users to download and import it into Passbook on their iPhone or iPod.

The SITA BoardingPass API fully supports the Passbook facility, enabling boarding passes created by the API to be integrated into Passbook. Passes can be updated dynamically via the Apple Push Notification service which notifies the user of important updates, such as gate changes at the airport or changes to schedule departure times.

A boarding pass contains a 2D barcode, conforming to IATA’s standards, (and for use in USA, TSA requirements), which can be scanned and interpreted by airport scanners. In addition, it includes textual information such as flight details, baggage allowances, safety notices and seat allocations. It also includes location and timing information allowing Passbook to alert the user when they arrive at the airport.

Mobile boarding passes developed using the SITA BoardingPass API can be customised for the various distribution methods including delivery to iOS 6 iPhone and iPod touch devices. All customisation of boarding passes is done via the Self-service Development Console.
