General Image Information

Images for both retina display quality and standard display can be uploaded for the template for Passbook. The dimensions for the boarding pass images are specified in the following sections.

The Passbook app will crop images that are oversized but for best results it is recommended to create images of the exact size as specified by Apple.

For retina display, the image must have a high enough pixel density that the human eye is unable to notice pixelation at a typical viewing distance. Therefore, for this quality a higher resolution pixel image must be uploaded as specified in the following sections.

Uploading Icon Images

This image in png format is used when sending a passenger notification when the passenger’s device is within range of the airport location. This image should identify your airline’s corporate brand. A 29 x 29 pixel image should be uploaded for standard alerts. A 58 x 58 pixel is required for retina displays.

Alert Notification with Icon Image

To upload the icon image:

  1. Click on the icon.png tab on the Apple Passbook Configuration screen.
  2. To select required image, click on the Browse button for either a Standard image type or for a Retina Display image type and select the required file from the appropriate location.

The file is automatically uploaded and displayed with its dimensions as shown in the following example.

Uploading Logo Images

The logo image in png format is displayed in the top left hand corner of the pass as shown in i the image below. A 160 x 50 pixel image should be uploaded for standard display iPhones or iPods. A 320 x 100 image is required or retina displays.

  1. Click on the logo.png tab on the Apple Passbook Configuration screen.
  2. To select a required image, click on the Browse button for either a Standard image type or for a Retina Display image type and select the required file from the appropriate location.

The file is automatically uploaded and displayed with its dimensions as shown in the following example:

Uploading a Footer Image

The footer image is optional. If it is included in the pass, it is displayed directly above the barcode.

The footer image in png format is typically used to highlight information about the passenger or boarding pass. Examples of footer representations include VIP, Priority Boarding, or Frequent Flyer information and these are defined as custom parameters. Footer images can also represent Special Service Requests (SSRs), for example, special meal requests, special baggage handling requests, unaccompanied minors, and disabled passengers. Up to twenty footer images can be uploaded to, one at a time, to highlight each service request or item of information.

A JavaScript function must also be defined for each service to ensure that the correct footer image is displayed for the required service.

A 286 x 15 pixel image should be uploaded for the footer image for both standard and retina display iPhones or iPods. A 572 x30 image is required for retina displays.

To load the image:

  1. Click on the footer.png tab on the Apple Passbook Configuration screen.
  2. Click on the Add Footer Image button.

  3. To select required image, click on the Browse button for either a Standard image type or for a Retina Display image type and select the required file from the appropriate location.
    The file is automatically uploaded and displayed with its dimensions as shown in the following example.

  4. In the Image Selection Script box at the side of the screen, modify the script code to specify the required service field or custom parameter to display this image. See the examples in the following section.
  5. Click on the Add Footer Image button again to add another image and modify the associated script to display this image. See the examples in the following section.

Footer Image Example Scripts

In the following example, an image is created to represent a SITA Frequent Flyer and is uploaded as footer image ‘0’.

Image 0
SITA Frequent Flyer

A script is created to determine when this image is displayed. In the following simple example script, the following happens:

  • If the passenger is a SITA Frequent Flyer, the footer will display image ‘0’.
  • Otherwise, if the passenger is not a frequent flyer or a frequent flyer with another airline, it returns image ‘-1’ which specifies no footer image should be included.

 function selectFooter(BRec){
  if (BRec.ffAirline=="XS"){
    // For SITA Frequent flyers, display image 0 as footer
    return 0;
  }
  // For all others (could be frequent flyers with other airlines or not frequent flyers)
  // Do not include a footer image
  return -1;
}

This image is displayed as follows:

As up to twenty different images can be displayed representing different type of passenger information or special service requests, more complex scripts can be created in order to display different images depending on the criteria defined in the script.

For example, the following image is created to represent a SITA Platinum Frequent Flyer passenger and is uploaded as footer image ‘1’

SITA Platinum Frequent Flyer

The following script example identifies which image to display as follows:

  • If the passenger is a SITA Frequent Flyer, the footer will display image ‘0’.
  • If the passenger is a SITA Platinum Frequent Flyer, the footer will display image ‘1’.
  • Otherwise, if the passenger is not a frequent flyer or a frequent flyer with another airline, it returns image ‘-1’ which specifies no footer image should be included.

function selectFooter(BRec){
  if (BRec.ffAirline=="XS"){
    // For SITA Frequent flyers,
    if (BRec.ffTier=="Platinum"){
      // If a platimium flyer, show logo 1
      return 1;
    }
    // Otherwise display the standard SITA Frequent flyer program
    return 0;
  }
  // For all others (could be frequent flyers with other airlines)
  // Do not include a footer image
  return -1;
}
