What can this proximity information be used for?
Features can be developed for airport and airline apps to use proximity values from beacons to provide relevant information to the passenger or perform some other function, for example, provide flight boarding prompts, baggage arrival information, security queue information, directions to a departure gate, or duty free promotions.
Why is SITA providing this service?
SITA is owned by the Air Transport Industry and has a long history of providing community services. SITA believes that beacons provide an opportunity to improve the passenger experience in airports if they can be widely and consistently adopted.
However, for the potential of beacons to be fully realized in airports, they need to be deployed as a common use infrastructure, similar to the way that airlines currently share kiosks, check-in desks and boarding gates. For this reason, SITA is providing a registry of air transport industry beacons.
When is it available?
The registry was launched in a private beta release in April, and the general launch took place at the SITA IT Summit in June.
